Safety when using gardening tools and equipment

Lawnmowers - General

Before mowing remove any dangerous objects like stones from the ground.

Always push a mower across slopes instead of up and down to avoid slipping.

Before you plant and establish new gardens be aware of underground cables or pipes.

Electric

If you use an electric mower to cut your lawn then always make sure the cable runs behind you and always use an 'Power Breaker' RCD cutout switch. The RCD switch will ensure that if you do accidentally cut into the electric cable, the power will instantly be switched off before you get electrocuted.

In no way should you cut towards the cable or use it in rain or on wet grass.

Before cleaning or making adjustments to your mower always make sure it is switched off and unplugged from the mains supply.

Petrol including 'ride on'

If you use a petrol mower you should always remove the spark plug cap before doing any maintainance. When using petrol driven mowers or refuelling NEVER SMOKE a cigarette, just the fumes from petrol can ignite into a fire ball.

Never leave a mowers engine running when unattended ( most modern machines have a 'dead mans switch' to prevent this).

Take care when using a ride-on mower. Operate a ride-on going up and down a slope rather than across the slope.

Power equipment

Strimmers, mowers, hedge trimmers and other gardening equipment can cause serious and fatal injuries if your not wearing the correct protective equipment and adequate clothing . Strong foot wear, preferably with steel caps, should be worn when using a strimmer or lawnmower. Goggles will protect your eyes from flying debris and ear defenders will prevent ear damage if used for extensive periods.

Ladders & Steps

When using steps or ladders to trim the hedge or do some tree pruning always have another person to hold the steps or ladders.
Always ensure that they are on a level surface to prevent them tipping over.

Bamboo Canes

Bamboo canes in the garden are responsible for a lot of injuries to the face and eyes so always cover the tops either with commercial cane covers or make your own from plastic bottle tops, or a lump of modeling clay.

Lifting Heavy Objects

Study the object first and if you think it looks to heavy then don't lift it yourself, find someone to help you lift it. Get yourself close to the object with your knees bent. When you have a good grip start to lift using your legs. Keep your back straight and keep the object close to your chest. Keep your back straight and the object close to your body. To put the object down just do the reverse.

Bonfires

A lot of areas now forbid the use of bonfires to dispose of rubbish (check your local regulations and bye-laws).

If you are allowed the use of bonfires, always be aware of the threat of the fire speading. Site the fire carefully and clear the immediate surrounding area of any combustible debris. Use a proprietry incinerator if possible. If the fire does get out of hand, wet the surrounding area to prevent the spread too quickly and call for immediate assistance.
