Myths
There are several myths about earthworm habits. One which has come about over the years is that sometimes earthworms were rained from the sky. This is probably because many earthworms are crawling about on the ground after heavy rainfall, as if they just fell out of the sky. In reality, this is because earthworms crawl out of their burrows to avoid the water flooding their home. Even though earthworms can breathe in water, they cannot stay immersed in it for a long time.
