Pomegranates, originally from Persia, have red or orange flowers similar to Camellias. The fruits are orange coloured when ripe, have a very leathery skin and are packed full of seeds in a pink pulp inside.
Varieties
The Dwarf variety - Nana - is the best variety and is also suitable for growing in pots or containers.
Cultivation
They will grow and flower in the UK but very seldom fruit.
Soil conditions
Pomegranates require a very fertile, well drained soil, alkaline soil.
Pruning / Training
They can be trained as a fan but are usually grown as a bush, especially if only being grown for their ornamental value.
If grown outdoors - Prune old, diseased or weak wood out in spring. Prune Indoor specimens in early winter.
