Growing Pomegranates

Pomegranates, originally from Persia, have red or orange flowers similar to Camellias. The fruits are orange coloured when ripe, have a very leathery skin and are packed full of seeds in a pink pulp inside.

Varieties

The Dwarf variety - Nana - is the best variety and is also suitable for growing in pots or containers.

Cultivation

They will grow and flower in the UK but very seldom fruit.

Soil conditions

Pomegranates require a very fertile, well drained soil, alkaline soil.

Pruning / Training

They can be trained as a fan but are usually grown as a bush, especially if only being grown for their ornamental value.

If grown outdoors - Prune old, diseased or weak wood out in spring. Prune Indoor specimens in early winter.
